Going Offroad on Fraser Island

Going Offroad on Fraser Island

I came to Fraser Island without knowing much about it. Like most of places I go I don’t know much about them before actually being there. I didn’t know it was World Heritage listed or that it was the biggest sand island in the world for example.

Fraser was one of the top places to visit (and everyone will tell you to go) so I booked a 2 days/1 night tour. What a pleasant surprise I got! The island is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to for a while.

There are no roads on the island and as it is all sand, a 4x4 vehicle is the only way to go. There are some pretty tricky paths and a lot of people get stuck.

Fraser as a few enchanting sights like Wanggoolba Creek and Eli Creek. Both are creeks of pure fresh water (you can drink from it) flowing on top of sand. The first one is right in the middle of the rainforest and the second right next to the sea where you can swim in it.

One of the highlight of the trip was a short plane ride over the island, taking off and landing right from the beach! We even got to see a whale and dolphins while over the sea.

The plane landed next to the Maheno, a century old shipwreck and a good spot to take nice pictures.

There are much more to see on Fraser Island and every part is just beautiful. This is a place which you cannot miss. Unfortunately, because my time is short, I only did the 2 days tour but I which to have done more. Next time ;)
