Does Sydney Live Up to the Hype?
Australia
In the months I was traveling before arriving in Sydney I must have heard how great it was hundreds of time. Everybody is always raving about how amazing Sydney is. It was finally time for me to check it out, stopping in Australia's most iconic city for a week before flying out of the country. So does Sydney live up to the hype? I would say yes although I feel a little something is miss... read more »

Day Trip to the Blue Mountains
Australia
The Blue Mountains are a short hour drive from Sydney and an excellent escape from the city. There are countless of day trips available but you could easily drive there. The name comes from the blue haze produced by the eucalyptus forest. It is a beautiful place, especially because there are excellent viewpoints which let you see the whole panorama. The landscape is almost untouched by hu... read more »

Learning to Surf in Bryon Bay
Australia
Byron Bay is the backpacker town *par excellence*. Laid back and turned toward alternative lifestyles, Byron is also a good surf spot. I signed up for a four hours lesson with Mojosurf. Starting early we were dropped off a beach near town. Luckily we were a small group so the instructor had more time for each of us. The lesson starts on the beach with some basic knowledge about waves and... read more »

Quick Stop in Brisbane
Australia
Quick stop in Brisbane on my way south down the east coast of Australia. There's not much to do as a tourist but it was my first encounter with a big city in the country. Brisbane is a really nice place with a long walkway along the river opposite the CBD, a lively city center, lots of places to eat and grab a drink. It was a nice feeling being back in a big cosmopolitan city as I'm no... read more »

Going Offroad on Fraser Island
Australia
I came to Fraser Island without knowing much about it. Like most of places I go I don't know much about them before actually being there. I didn't know it was World Heritage listed or that it was the biggest sand island in the world for example. Fraser was one of the top places to visit (and everyone will tell you to go) so I booked a 2 days/1 night tour. What a pleasant surprise I got... read more »

Sailing the Whitsunday Islands
Australia
The Whitsunday Islands is a group of islands of the coast of Queensland which are best explored via sailing trips. The most common starting point is Airlie Beach, a really nice seaside town. From there, every shop and hostel will be happy to sell you a sailing tour. I chose a reconverted racing boat on a two days, one night trip. Named Siska, the boat had a very interesting history and i... read more »

A Week in Cairns and Around
Australia
Although I primarily came to Cairns to dive on the Great Barrier Reef, I took some time to explore a bit of the surrounding area. Northern Queensland is a tropical region, covered with rainforest and with some beautiful beaches. Although Cairns is not bad, I was expecting better. The city has definitely a backpacker vibe, good nightlife and a nice lagoon (no beach) but the town in itself... read more »

Visiting Another Planet in Uluru
Australia
How could I miss one of the symbol of Australia? Uluru, the rock in the middle of Australia (ie. nowhere), was a must do on my list. It was a long way from Darwin to reach Alice Springs, my longest bus ride yet, 22h through the desert. From there I embarked on a three days camping tour. The Rock Tour is quite famous and you'll find information about it in pretty much all hostels around A... read more »

A Boat Ride in Crocodile Country
Australia
Coming from Indonesia, Darwin was the closest entry point to Australia, a short two hours flight. As it is located in the far north, Darwin enjoys a tropical weather and July and August are perfect months to visit this region. Darwin is a good starting point to explore Litchfield National Park and Kakadu National Park. Unfortunately I didn't have much time as my plan in Australia is mo... read more »
